Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) – The Password of Pune’s Development
Under the leadership of Congress Party President and the UPA Chairman, Smt. Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, an ambitious project worth Rs.50,000 crore was laid out for the development of 62 cities in the country. This was further expanded to Rs.1,00,000 crore. A special body namely, the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) was instituted to execute the project. Pune, one of the first cities that was selected as a beneficiary of this scheme. The password to Pune’s development, thus can rightly be termed as JNNURM.

The Congress Party and the Pune Municipal Corporation were strictly required to be eligible for JNNURM grants. One such requirement was to implement E-Governance at the PMC level. This led the city to become an early bird in getting a huge JNNURM grant sanctioned, ahead of the III Commonwealth Youth Games. This phenomenally helped in infrastructure development before the Games. Proposals amounting to Rs. 6000 crs (amount) for development in various areas have been put forth out of which Rs.2500 cr (amount) is already sanctioned under JNNURM. Rs.350 crores have been sanctioned for rehabilitation and providing well-built houses to slum dwellers, based on hill tops, hill slopes, river beds and canals. This will also take care of the environmentally sensitive issues of preserving the hill tops/slopes of Pune. Also river bed development projects, pukka stalls for hawkers, new elevated roads and widening of night shelters, BRT Services are other areas under focus under JNNURM. Kalmadi has been instrumental in getting this grant and is in the process of getting more sanctions.

Mr. Kalmadi has remarked on many occasions that he will not let political differences come in the way of development of Pune. Political clout should and will be used for bringing about growth and development in the city and providing basic amenities and facilities to the common man.

Kalmadi thanked the Union Minister of Urban Development, Dr. Jaipal Reddy in Parliament for having sanctioned a substantial grant under JNNURM to Pune. He also requested that a similar grant be made available for the development of the cantonment areas in the city. In response Dr. Reddy remarked “I am usually not so generous, its only due to Suresh Kalmadi’s persistence and resolve to get maximum funds for development of his constituency that Pune has received this grant”.It may be noted that this a mammoth sanction that came by the city’s way, thanks to the handy work of its focused MP, Suresh Kalmadi.

Plethora of developmental works including widening and decorating of the roads, pavements, footpaths etc. were carried out with the help of these JNNURM grants. Sub-ways at Baner and at Pune Railway station were also ready ahead of the III Commonwealth Youth Games in the city in October 2008. It can be concluded that Kalmadi was instrumental in winning a mega gift for the citizens of Pune... the huge grant of Rs.2500 crores under JNNURM.
