LEADING IN EMPLOYMENT POTENTIAL
Kalmadi’ dreams that his Pune city should really become a ‘happy city’ with employment opportunities for everyone. This is actually backed by his practical efforts and Pune takes pride of place amongst metros providing substantial employment opportunities.

Various domains of employment.
1 .  Pune is home to companies Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, Bajaj Tempo, Kirloskar Group, Garware Group, David Brown, Atlas Copo, Thermax etc., Units like Government ammunition and Hindustan Antibiotics laid a foundation for the city’s business legacy. As an important extension of the business profile of the city, the IT, BT and automobile sectors are growing here immensely. Animation and Gaming is another industry that is catching up. The services industry has grown manifold with huge investments being pumped into the business of mega malls, hotels, warehouses and multiplexes.

2 .  According to last years figures, about 15 lakh people have traveled by air into the city. There has also been a phenomenal rise in the number of star hotels that are coming up. The hospitality industry has attracted investments worth Rs.7000 crores and has seen an addition of 5800 new accommodation units. As some veterans remark in jest “It was the theatres that would be houseful, now it’s the hotel rooms and aeroplanes” Resultantly the annual growth in the employment potential is tremendous ever year.

3 .  To promote employment for Puneites, he also mooted the idea of giving sops on behalf of PMC to companies absorbing local candidates upto 75% of the employment quota. In his Lok Sabha Elections campaign in 2004. Suresh Kalmadi has stated that there will be an employment potential for one lakh people per annum. Now, in reality, almost two lakh jobs are created per annum. The Planning Commission has estimated an employment potential for 10 lakh people in Pune in the coming five years. The Congress party, under the able leadership of Suresh Kalmadi, has taken a revolutionary step ahead. He stated, “there is no stopping people from other states who come to Pune for employment”. However, he did stress that local youth must largely benefit from the employment potential in the city.
