Known as the “Pensioners Paradise” in earlier times, senior citizens make up an estimated 10% of Pune’s population. Under the umbrella of PMC, Suresh Kalmadi initiated many projects which benefited these citizens.

• A recreation center for senior citizens and day care centers in every municipal ward, discounted rates in PMC and BRT buses were some demands put forth by Kalmadi.
• He introduced insurance policy for aged poor. Trying to do his bit as an MP for senior citizens has been his yeomen attempt ever since he came to power.
• It has also been his trust to ensure that every garden in the city has a jogging track, benches etc.
• He tried to organize health camps for senior citizens, nana – nani parks have come up in all localities.
• Hundreds of working class old women were brought under the focus of Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar Yojana. This is a scheme run by the Congress Party, reaching out to the working class women.
• He also encouraged free pilgrimage trips for senior citizens to Varanasi, Rameshwar and other places.
• The idea to start a meditation center in memory of Gandhian, Late Balasaheb Bharde was also mooted by Suresh Kalmadi.
