Pune has an old world charm as also a modern lifestyle and has a large youth population. The city can surely have one more sobriquet to its credit; the City of Youth. When late Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi brought under electoral scope, youth from 18 years and above, Pune recorded a whopping 4.5 lakh new voters.
Suresh Kalmadi started as a Youth Congress leader in Pune and worked for the youth. To unite and channelize this energy he has been working for this promising segment of the society.
1. Kalmadi has always strived to make the city ‘free from unemployment’ and initiated programmes under the PMC to make poor students and youth, computer literate. He introduced training programmes and computer libraries.

4. By hosting the III Commonwealth Youth Games Pune 2008 for athletes under 18 years of age, Suresh Kalmadi sought once again to promote Olympic Sport among the youth and involve them in the organization of the CYG. More than 5000 volunteers worked tirelessly by over a month and became an integral part of the CYG Pune 2008, an experience that will hold them in good stead in future. He conceptualized the ‘Bond Forever’ program during the CYG Pune 2008; a unique communication program between school children and the athletes of the Commonwealth. 71 schools from Pune partnered 71 nations – students studied their partner nations and made projects, wrote letters and made eco friendly gifts for the athletes, cheered for their partner country during the Games and invited the athletes and Coaches to their schools to give valuable tips on participation and training in Olympic Sport. This has encouraged the prospect of children taking the sport and thus a healthy lifestyle, even further. More than 10000 school children also participated in the Opening and closing Ceremonies of the Pune Games.

Students of animation, direction, script writing etc., are also encouraged at the Pune International Film Festival.
6. Kalmadi also stresses that when the city is growing fast, its local youth should get 75% employment of the total opportunities and companies employing them should get tax concessions from the PMC and State Government. He also initiates the participation of youth in polls by trying to include more names in the electoral list. All this has made him a popular MP in this dynamic cross section of the society – the youth.
