My dear fellow Punekar,
Namaskar!
Our historic Pune city is fast emerging as a global city. From a pensioner’s paradise in the 1980s, we are now a bustling economy, teeming with hopes of a bigger, younger, more diverse population. Punekars are fiercely proud of their roots yet, are not averse to modernization.
The internationally renowned Forbes magazine has included Pune amongst the 10 fastest growing cities of the world. The Panshet floods in 1961 were a turning point for Pune to undergo change and improvement. In 1994, the National Games were held in Pune and another milestone in infrastructure and city development was achieved. For the last many years Pune is undergoing development under many schemes and projects.
Pune was one of the first cities to receive funds under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).Important projects undertaken were Integrated Road Development Plan, including concretization and widening, slum rehabilitation and sustaining and saving environment. The river cleaning plan was formulated, new gardens were created, water supply and sewage treatment upto 2025 was worked out. Side by side, the plan for development of the new fringe villages included in Pune was also prepared.
Concrete steps were taken to provide jobs and employment opportunities to youth of Pune. Over 2,00,000 jobs have been generated in the past few years, especially in the field of IT, BT, Animation & Gaming and the Auto sector.City infrastructure and development in various sectors has been implemented to quite an extent in the last 4 – 5 years. Traffic regulation however, is still a major concern.
Concurrent with all this development, Pune won the right to host the
III Commonwealth Youth Games in October 2008. This was a defining moment in Pune’s history! The city received huge funds for development of infrastructure. Major road works were undertaken and completed, extensive beautification and landscaping was done, gardens were created, signages and street furniture was erected…
Pune got a facelift! This is the legacy left by the CYG for Pune city and her residents, which they can enjoy for many years to come.As President of the Indian Olympic Association,
, I am extremely proud of the success of the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune and the
performance of our athletes in Beijingand most importantly, the
topping of the medal tally by our young athletes in the Commonwealth Youth Games.Encouraged by these achievements, my team and I are making a concerted effort to
to bid for the Olympic Games to be held in India, in Pune in 2020.the Olympic Games to be held in India, in Pune in 2020. The CYG brought Rs 2500 crores from the JNNURM funds of the Government of India. Can you imagine what the fund flow will be if the Olympics are held here? Will we be able to host an Olympic Games? After the success of CYG, we can proudly and confidently say
“YES, WE WILL!”I have always worked consistently to solve the issues faced by our growing city and worked with all stakeholders and decision makers, cutting across party lines and overlooking political differences to chalk out the development plan for the city. However, there is much more to be done…. We still have miles to go!
In view of the ever increasing demands of our growing city I have started formulating a plan - a comprehensive document on what I think are the developments to be carried out to make Pune a model city by the year 2020. I call it VISION 2020. A lot of brain storming and thought has gone into its creation. 2020 seems a long way off; however, these are large scale, long term plans and preparation needs to start now, so that necessary funds can be sought from the Government. Difficult as it may seem, it is not unattainable. Planning for the CYG started in 2006 and Pune achieved major milestones in the areas of infrastructure development. The Central and State Governments did provide the necessary funds and the event was a huge success. Pune has never looked better.
However, formulating such a large scale plan is not a one man job.
My Vision 2020 for Pune requires the involvement of the whole city in its implementation, including the community groups, the corporate sector and most importantly, individuals i.e TEAM PUNE. We all have a role to play to achieve the goals that will make our vision a reality. What do you think should be done to make Pune a model city by the year 2020? Do you have a vision for your beloved city? If you do,
I appeal to all of you to please share it with me on www.sureshkalmadi.org. It will help me put together a comprehensive VISION 2020 document.
I am confident of your cooperation. We all love our beloved Pune. Together, let’s make it a truly global city we are even more proud of!
With warm regards
