Suresh Kalmadi became the State Minister of Railways in 1995- 96 under the Prime Minister P.V. Narsimha Rao. In a short span of nine months of his holding office, he presented outstanding work. The only state minister to present a railway budget in the parliament, Kalmadi held the post from 16 Sept 1995 to 15 June 1996.
In his remarkable railway budget• Artists, sportsmen, medal winners and the aged got special concessions.
• Special status sanctioned for the Pune Section ushering development opportunities for Maharashtra.
• Holding the sentiments of the Marathi population aloft, he renamed the Victoria Terminus (VT) station at Mumbai as Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus.
• A survey for reducing the running time between Pune- Mumbai was allotted Rs 90 cr and obviously, it was Kalmadi’s great effort behind getting it sanctioned.
• He introduced a new train- the Shatabdi Express, even as he renovated the already operational Deccan Queen and Sinhagad express trains.
• For the convenience of pilgrims travelling to Pandharpur, Shirdi and Tuljapur.He contemplated bringing these on the railway mainstream. Tirupati, Nanded, Amritsar, Varanasi, and Ajmer were studied as possible stations needing better railway networks as Kalmadi laid out plans for their upgradation. A special sanction to Ahmedabad as a separate section and increasing the frequency of Pune- Ahmedabad Ahimsa Express to thrice weekly were attained in Kalmadi’s tenure as state railways minister.
• He was also instrumental in starting of the Dnyanganga (Pune- Varanasi) and Azad Hind (Pune- Kolkata) express trains. He stressed on the need to modernize Pune, Khadki, Dapodi and Shivajinagar stations in Pune.
• Kalmadi put in special efforts to solve the problems of local train commuters. Computerization of reservation terminals was given a thrust by him. He introduced 50% travel concessions for railway porters once in a year and also provided special waiting rooms for them.
• His concern for the working class is amply clear in this initiative. His master plan for the city’s development in 21st century nourishes the dream of great administrator, late Shri S. G. Barve for ‘Ideal Pune’.
• His initiation of railway projects in the following ten years include launch of new trains between Pune- Patna, Pune- Lucknow, Pune- Jodhpur, Bangalore- Pune- Delhi, Pune-Nasik etc. He was successful in having started a new Pune-Delhi Superfast train during the Commonwealth Youth Games held in 2008 in the city.
